BAGUIO – Barely a week after actress Farrah Fawcett died of anal cancer on June 25 (Los Angeles time), officials from the Department of Health in Baguio City warned the public to eat their vegetables lest they suffer the same fate.

The 62-year-old “Charlie’s Angels” actress had suffered a long battle with colorectal cancer, which is reportedly the second most common cancer affecting patients in the United States, next to lung cancer.

Studies show that the risk for colorectal cancer is higher among older people, smokers, patients with existing ulcers, alcoholics, and people with low-fiber, high-protein, and high-fat diets.

Elvira Belingon, Medical Officer V of the Baguio Health Department, said that the condition can be avoided by eating vegetables daily and adopting a healthy lifestyle.

“In most studies, meat eaters, along with those with genetic dispositions [to the disease], have a high risk of acquiring this. Malaki ang relation nito sa unhealthy lifestyle,” she said.

She added that a balanced diet of meat and fiber-rich vegetables can help offset the disease, along with regular check-ups, exercise, and avoiding vices.

Belingon explained that the disease can affect the rectum, colon, and the body’s digestive system causing bowel movement problems, painless bleeding at the rectum, or bloody stool. Other symptoms include abdominal discomfort, vomiting, unexplained weight loss, and tiredness.

According to DOH records, the incidence of colorectal cancer among Baguio residents increased slightly from 16 cases in 2007 to 28 cases in 2008. Report from Philip Erpelo, ABS-CBN Northern Luzon.

My goodness! Bakit kailangang ipanakot ang kamatayan ng isang tao para mabenta lang ang gulay nila? I know, I know this is a health warning to the public, pero joskonaman, noh! Puwede namang sabihin ito without using the painful death of a cancer victim for comparison.

Mas malakas ba ang impact ng warning ng DOH if they won’t respect the dead?

At anong ginagawa ng mga editors ng ABS-CBN news? Nagto-tong its ba kaya nakalusot ang insensitive title na ito? O talagang may kalyo na rin ang damdamin nila kaya wala nang respeto sa naiwang pamilya ni Farrah Fawcet?

Amazing Grace

Sports pilot Jessica Cox

I have written a post about amazing Faith, the wonder dog who went though a normal dog’s life without her two front legs.  Well, guys,  Faith is not the only one. There is another famous lady,  who showed amazing grace all her life growing up totally different from her peers.

Jessica Cox, a 25-year-old FilAm who lives in Tucson, Arizona, was born with bilateral congenital limb deficiency.  In Tagalog, ipinanganak nang walang kamay, as in walang  braso kahit kapiraso. But this handicap never stopped her from being and becoming the compleat woman  that she is now.

It’s truly amazing, the grace with which she handled the pressure living a fruitful life with the kind of  limitations dealt her by fate. With the loving support of an American father and a Filipino mom from Samar, Jessica went on to earn her Airman’s certificate last October 10, 2008, in a no-rudder-pedal Ercoup.

She is the first woman pilot in aviation history to have been licensed to fly with only her feet – no prosthetics and no aircraft modifications, other than a seat cushion. Jessica is just 5’1” tall.

Hindi lang ‘yon, meron siyang two blackbelts in Tae Kwan Do, plays the piano, drives cars, danced for twelve years, has a degree in Psychology from the University of Arizona and has a successful career as a motivational speaker.  According to the American Tae Kwan Do Association, she is the first woman without arms  ever to earn a second blackbelt in the Korean martial art in the US.

And what’s more amazing, she does all these stuff just like any normal person who has no constraining disabilities.  She drives cars and flies those  planes without special adaptations.  She types on a regular keyboard, just like you and me. As in imbes na kamay, paa niya ang ginagamit niya.  If that’s not total awesomeness, I don’t know what else to call it.

May kapatid si Jollibee?

Opo, totoo ang tsismis, mga misis. Hindi uniko iho ang ating paboritong fastfood mascot, ang kyut na bubuyog, si Jollibee.

‘Yung sex scandal video noon involving a busy bee lookalike ay hindi po si Jollibee. ‘Yung tatay po niya ‘yon, si Mr. Bee. Nahuli siya ni Mrs. Bee at bilang ganti, nag-ala Bee-Kho si misis (harhar parang meryenda). Ikinalat sa youtube ang affairs ni Mr. Bee.

Ang letratong ito ay patunay na sobrang virile si Mr. Bee at very fertile naman si Mrs. Bee.

Pero hindi po ‘yon ang laman ng mahalagang balita. Dahil ladies’ man at player talaga itong si Mr. Bee, nagkalat na po siya ng lahi. Palibhasa kyut din siya kahit may edad na.

Ayon sa aking fastfood spy, may nagsampa ng demanda laban kay Mr. Bee.  Ito po ay paternity suit. May anak sa labas ang tatay ni Jollibee.

Kaya nakarating  sa korte ang isyung ito ay sa dahilang ayaw kilalanin ni Mr. Bee na anak niya ang nagdemanda. Hindi raw niya kamukha ang bata (na teenager na ngayon) kaya hindi siya ang ama.

Nanghihingi ng child support ang bata. Hindi na niya maipagpatuloy ang pag-aaral dahil sa kawalan nila ng pera. Napilitan na rin siyang magtrabaho bilang fastfood mascot sa probinsya nila katulad ng kuya Jollibee niya.
